Mayor Jeff Graham says - SAD if you want a PS3! - Friday, November 17, 2006 at 7:07:51 PM
I was on the at Newzjunky web site yesterday and I listened to what Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham had to say about people waiting in line to buy a Playstation 3 also known as a PS3.

Listen to the audio clip.

Is this Graham guy really as out of touch with technology as he makes him self out to be on the radio ? I swear I could write a book regarding the goofy things he said on this topic alone, but instead I think I'll just try to keep it somewhat shorter.

So here goes...

Jeff, here's an idea, the next time you talk about something do a little research and know what you are talking about.

What Jeff pretty much said. Not verbatim. My response.
The cartridges that go in these things are expensive ? No Jeff, the PS3 uses BLU RAY discs for the games. Very few modern systems use cartridges of any sort nor have they for some time. Are the discs expensive? Sure they are, but you also get a lot more from them than a video game from 10 years ago. You can also sell your game on eBay when your done with it at a 20% loss which you couldn't do 10 years ago. You also have the option of renting the games. Now, in case your wondering BLU RAY is a new high definition disc standard for watching movies and storing data. BLU RAY players alone can cost $400-10,000 dollars. While were on the subject the last generation of video game consoles mostly used optical media as well. Regardless, The PS3 is much more than a gaming machine. It can play high definition BLU RAY movies and in the near future will also be able to deliver High Definition content to high definition TV's via an internet connection. Were talking episodes of your favorite TV show and Movies. For a lot of people it will completely replace the need for cable & Satellite TV. In addition to that the PS3 is a media center allowing the playing of various audio and video formats.. etc etc etc (For example... your Music or Video Collection) Truthfully it's a lot of technology for the money. Ever heard of 1080p, I would guess not.
People not buying shoes for their kids and people not having thanksgiving dinner because they spend their money on a PS3. Jeff, are you on crack ? I highly doubt that is the usually the case. If so, ya those people are idiots. I feel however the majority of people in that bad of financial shape are going to stick with their old systems for the time being.
The electronics companies sucker people into to buying these things for way more than they are worth and next week you'll be able to get one for half the price. Sony loses money on every one of these they sell and they will for some time. The PS3 is probably going to cost the same amount next year at this time. Perhaps slightly less, but nothing significant. I am sure you don't know this, but SONY is in big financial trouble right now because of all those battery recalls as well as poor sales the last few years in the consumer electronic market. If the PS3 is not a hit for them they are in from some tough times. As for the games, they cost nearly as much to produce as do feature films. In some cases more. Some of these games are worked on by over 200 people for 2-3 years before they are ready. They also offer endless online game play which means they are not worthless after playing them through. They are hardly comparable to PONG. Now, does Sony plan to makes it's money back and then some day? OF COURSE!

Now, if you ask me if I think it is ridiculous that people fight over these things and what not. The answer is yes I do, but that isn't really what you were getting at from what I got out of your radio show comments. (And yes I am aware people get shot over these things too, but really that should not be blamed on a company selling a product. The only blame for that is stupid people.)

You know something Jeff? What's sad is that the Mayor of a fairly large city is so out of touch with technology. Technology is the future. I am 32 now, but I was part of the Nintendo Generation and games got me interested in computers which lead to my path in life. I pursued technology and because of that I now run a successful software Company. www.cjwsoft.com. I also built the 1st two versions of the online MLS system that 9 counties including Jefferson use. If is wasn't for video games and computers I would probably be pumping gas somewhere. I can say the same thing for my little brother who now works for Lions Gate films in California. We both played video games like it was our job and we are both very successful later in our lives.

I guess you have no clue that Video Games are big business. Video game sales have recently eclipsed those of the motion picture industry and you can bet your ass that 95% of the people working on today's games are the people that were playing video games 10 years ago. People that play online are even going on to win major gaming competitions down the road. We're talking 100,000 prizes and similar prestige to that of a professional athlete. There are all sorts of jobs that the video games industry creates as well.

So, if people want to save their quarters for 6 months and stand in line to get a gaming machine that is their business. I guess you have never purchased anything expensive that you didn't really need. I guess you didn't buy a DVD player or a nice TV set in the last 10 years. Hey, some people spend a lot of money at the bar. I am one of them and I bet you are too. Now, if that isn't a waste of money I don't what is. I have a lot more I could say about this, but I think I will stop here.

Jeff, stick to politics !! When you talk about things like this you just make yourself sound like an ASS!

Mayor Graham is a drunken bum who always looks like he needs a shower. How could he know anything about new technology, he doesn't even know what a bar of soap is for.

Funny, Chris, funny. You could not have said it better, and not only is he out of touch with technology but also with the future of the city of Watertown and Jefferson county.

Nice job on that article. Our Mayor is a bit of a tool sometimes. I am surpised this didn't get put on newzjunky, but then again that site probably kisses the mayors ass. Why does this site even link to them as they don't seem to link back?
