Skiff's Web Cam

Just an update. I worked on the Skiff's Web cam most of the day today. The camera is all mounted and hookled up. I had it working really well, but right when I was getting ready to leave the internet connection and router started acting up so we're going to get a new wireless router tommoro and hopefully cure the problem. We are using an older router I had lying around and it seems to have issues.
Hopefully everything is running soon. Then we can do things like broadcast the Dart League games live and let people on the web watch the stage when bands are playing.
No doubt there will be plenty of haters bitching about there being a camera in the place, but that isn't my problem. Where it points is up to the bar and besides, bars all over have webcams. In the beginning people bitch and say they won't go to the bar anymore, but in the long run they still do and forget it is even there. It's just the nature of people to bitch about anything cool people or businesses try to do.
Anyway.. this is what it will look like based on where it is mounted right now. It can be turned by the bar staff to point wherever they want it to.

My response to some comments:
Sorry Ralph & Judy but I have strong disagreements with your attitudes on this.
Trust me, despite what you think the local cops have a lot better things to do than watch a web cam for hours, trying to pay attention to how much someone drinks, and then catch that person when they leave the bar. I mean do you really think that they don't have a fairly good idea who you are and what you drive and notice your parked in front of the bar for hours? Do you really they can't see a lot just by driving by and looking in the huge windows. Maybe Skiff's should cover up all the windows so the cops cant see you standing in the bar when they drive by?
The point is the local cops definetly have an idea who you are and figure most of you have been drinking. They know a lot more than you think, but they also leave you alone because they are not going to bother you unless you break the driving laws or do something to get pulled over.
I mean maybe if they are looking for you they can use the webcam to find you, but they certainly are not going to be using the webcam as grounds to pull someone over.
Then you got what Nick said and that's a damn good point. I mean your complaining about not getting caught drinking & driving. What is wrong with that thought process?
Now who says the web cam is always going to point at the bar? It may very well always be pointed at the dart board or the stage and never at the bar. Or maybe not.. It's up the George where it points. Right now the thing doesn't even work outside of the skiffs wireless network. At least wait until things are finalized before you get too worked up. We had it pointing at the bar the last couple days cause I am trying to test it and get it working well. Some action on the video helps me see its working and not frozen or something.
In the long run the benefits of this web cam will most likely far outway any lost business from people that don't want to come in anymore and that is a fact. I have done my research on that. Every bar that puts a web cam up goes through the same thing. After a while it's not an issue and it actually helps the bar.
I hear the Dockside is getting one too. Are you not going to go in their either?
Seriously, I think your issue with the webcam is something other than the cops. It's got to be because the cops point is just not a good point. It is actually "totally stupid" as you would put it.
That's my stance but ultimately it is up to George. I have a feeling he agrees or we wouldn't be going through all the trouble of getting this all working.

I think the webcam is a great idea. I am able to see alll my frinds there before I show up. I think the people that have a problem with it just have things they are trying to hide. Probation, people who are cheating, rolling things and smokng outside. If you don't want anyone to see your personal business, keep your diry laundry at home...

Everyone is wrong, we are being monitored by all law enforcement agencies. Insurance companies say they no longer need to send investigators into the field thanks to the skiffs cam. Dog the bounty hunter said fugitives will have no where left to hide because of the skiffs cam. The FBI has established a new task force because of all the breaks in cases due to the web cam. Agent Scully and Agent Mulder say the truth is out there and it could be at skiffs so we will also keep an eye on the cam.

Who started the problem with the cam. there is no sound so its not like someone is listening to your business. Are people afraid to be seen in a bar what about the people already in there what do they think of you being there. They really don't give a dam.

Just want to say, the web cam isn't a bad idea. It took alittle while to get used to, but after awhile you forget it's even there. As for the cops, it's not like they can't see a car sitting there for hours on end and not know where you are, this is a small town and not alot of people around in the winter!! I wonder if Ralph and Judy know they are being watched up at the Dirty Dog, I hear they have 5 cameras up there, granted not web cams but still.........

Lets get on with a stable life The web cam should not cause that much trouble. We are all adults, and if a camera up in the celing is causing you to be uncomfortable then have another drink and get on with the fun of being down at skiffs.

I know we have had some complaints about the web cam, however in the long run I think george and sean are on to something quite positive. I have had calls from canada, new orleans, rochester, lake placid etc. and it seems that alot of people love the idea. Its too bad that some people have such negative attitudes on fun and new things....this is coming from someone who hardly ever agrees with George about anything, lol.so chill and have fun with it instead of complaining.

I think it's a great idea! If the COPS want to know who has been at the bar all day or all night, all's they have to do is DRIVE BY! Geesh I think some people just like to bit*h and complain. They just aren't happy. Great idea guys!! |

I think that it is an awesome idea. Like Nick said..if you have had too much to drink, then you shouldn't be driving. It is your own fault if you get caught and have been drinking. I think it is great because I could see who is in the bar before I even go in there. Can also watch from my house when I don't get a chance to go out. Watch all of the hilarious drunkedness!!

The cam is a great idea. I don't make it down to the Bay much in winter but stop in at Skiff's once or twice a week on the Harley during riding season. Nice to look in on the place and wish for the return of summer! |

Of course I have to reply to the “Judy's comment” I would hope and it better be the case that our officers of the law do not site around the office surfing the web to just by the off chance to catch someone that might have had a few to many drinks. I do hope that they put our tax $ to better use. Besides they could be a front row seat parked right outside if they wanted to and could then man all the bars. Drink and be responsible and you would not have to “worry”. "Site looking good !" |

I have the answer for Ralph and Judy and they will still have a place to go..Skiff's could hand out paper bags with holes cut out for them..and they will be " THE UNKNOWN DRINKERS "

Well, I don't know if any of that is true. I hope not cause that's unfortunate as far as not being able to go places.

It's funny you mention the Dockside because as far as I know Ralph and Judy are banned from there for complaining too much. I think they also banned from Brass Tacks. I am also pretty sure they won't go in the Dirty Dog or the Shipwreck. sh*t, they are last people that should be saying they won't go some place since they don't really have anywhere left to go.

Maybe if you drank too much to drive you shouldn't drive. A lot of people drive that really shouldn't. They figure they haven't had that much. They use the lack of taxis or whatever as and excuse. If everyone didn't drink and drive maybe there would be enough business for taxis to stay in business. What it comes down to is if you don't drink too much, then you have nothing to worry about when you drive.

Re: the new web cam in Skiffs, it might be fun to see friends and neighbors in a bar, especially if they are falling down drunk or just being stupid, but do you want the state police tuning in to watch who has been in the bar for how long and how much they have had to drink? Then we get in our vehicle and drive home right into their waiting arms. This seems totally stupid to me. What does anyone else think? Does George really want his customers to go elsewhere so they are not "watched.
