| Snapped Cable on T.I. Bridge - Wednesday, January 09, 2008 at 5:08:37 PM
|
I have been told by numerous sources that a cable snapped today on the T.I. Bridge.
It was originally heard over the Jefferson County scanner. Since then I have had a couple people call me as they crossed the bridge confirming the story. The most recent was Elliot Russel at 5:00 pm today.

| Now that I think about it that canadian who stopped was probablym that crazy lady "Nancy Today". Nancy and her husband Willam we're probably on their way back to Canada for some real "Canadian Ice Cream". They probably stopped the car so she could video tape the bridge rolling around.

A forum user named (R19Hole ) left this in the forums regarding the whole deal.. it certainly sounds like this person has a very scary experience.. "When I went across the bridge Wednesday the person in the toll booth said "drive safely, it's gonna be an exiting ride". What an understatement! When I reached about the center of the bridge, the person in front of me must have freaked out from the movement, and STOPPED! Now, I cross that bridge 6-10 times a week, and never really give a thought to there being any danger in doing so... until yesterday. Sitting there waiting for this idiot in front of me to start up again was one of the most frighting things I have experienced in quite some time. The bridge had turned into a roller coaster. You could actually see the guardrails undulating like a wave as the bridge bounced up and down, the car moving so much that it felt like 6 linebackers were slamming into it every 2 seconds. The noise that it was making sounded like Godzilla tearing Tokyo apart, it was the sound of metal ripping (actually, it was squeaking and squealing, but in my mind, at that moment, It sounded like my last moment on earth, the last sound I heard before being swallowed by the cold dark waters of the St Lawrence River). After about 15 seconds of that I was blowing the horn , trying to get numb nuts in front of me moving. Just as I was thinking " screw the airbag, I'm gonna push this asshole across the bridge, bumper to bumper", the car ( with Canadian plates I might add) started to move again. Obviously, I made it across safely without further incident, but as the toll collector said, it was one hell of an exciting ride. Did anyone else cross the bridge on Wednesday?"

| If my memory serves me right that supension bridge over the American Narrows is the only bridge out of five or so that were built with that design that is still standing. And I was told that in 1987. I guess the maintainence must be pretty intense, especially after the winter and all of the salt etc. Hopefully what ever it is can be repaired without to much disruption.

| Now, it's nothing to get all worked up about. "Daily Bridge Driver" is right in one partial aspect, it is a well built bridge. In fact, it's over-engineered. Most of the cables could snap, and as long as the main cables maintain integrity, the bridge would be fine. Now 18 wheeler with those kinds of warnings, it was probably carrying an alkali metal, probably should be driving over a bridge of that elevation with 60+mph wind speeds. They should have been held by the Bridge Authority.

| It is ok to "chit chat" about an issue but to accuse our friends and neighbors about "danger", "coverups" "paranoia" and liability is serious and damaging. That is more than just "chit chat"! It is hurtful!

| Hey "Daily Bridge Driver".. what are yout getting all worked up for.. this is just interesting news nothing more.. the only person you should have an issue with is that Loran person not everyone that posted. It is just news. If a cable breaks on the bridge and people want to chit chat about it so what.

| Actually you people need to get your facts straight! The bridge has lots of cables and when one breaks it is not a big deal! Stop trying to cause panic when there is no reason to! That bridge is one of the safest and well maintained bridges we have! Be proud of it and what it does for the Abay community and stop trying to spread stupid rumors. The people that work at this bridge are good local people! Do you really think if it was unsafe, they would let anyone drive over it??

| Actually the bridge, from my understanding of things, is set up incase this kind of thing to happens. there are enough support features to protect it if this does happen including the fact that that there are enough cables to pick up any excess slack if one of the cables does snap.

| This is very safe, why was this bridge left open when support cable is broken, kinda dangerous. How would it have been explained if something had happened and someone got killed because of it, and who would be fitting the bill for the lawsuit from that person or individuals families, us the tax payers. This is something that our representatives in government should be checking into, what do you think?

Funny there was nothing on the news about that. But then the TIBA has always been paranoid about releasing any info about crashes, accidents, etc. Strange they didn't notify the WIFD, who partner with them for disaster assistance. So, Elliot, how about a ride over to the mainland tomorrow? cur.

| when I was on my home from work I waited at the bridge for awhile because it is one way traffic because one of the huge cables that act as somewhat of a support cable has snapped and was laying on the other cables but you deff. see it was there. while going over the bridge I end up following a tractor trailer with three very nice placards that say "CORROSIVE", "EXPLOSIVE", and "MARINE POLLUTANT" now when we get to the top the trailer starts swaying very much so that all I was doing is praying that if it tips it goes right over.
