Seems like it is time for the Village to get some teeth on this matter! The fact that building (among others) has been allowed to flounder for so long is ridiculous. I spoke to Rob S.(dockside) many years ago when back for a visit and I recall he told me they either refused to sell or were asking a ridiculous sum for such a dilapitated property, I think it may have been the latter. Regardless, Rob S. and others have tried to no avail to obtain that building for nearly 30 years since it was last open. The place was hit and miss even when it was "open" during my childhood. At this point, it would appear that there is either no means to force improvements or there is simply no desire to do so on the part of the Board? Perhaps some type of a downtown improvement district can be formed or may already exist that can be a driving force behind an ordinance that could be passed to require an absentee owner to be forced into action? Something like a requirement that they open for business so many days a year and monetary fines added to their property tax when failing to do so? Rather than just sitting on the land they would be forced to improve it or eventually forfeit the property to auction. Constitutional? Maybe not, but something needs to be done with that building. While I don't believe the Bay needs yet another bar, something in that space is better than what is there now. It is one thing to live in the country and allow your property go to pot, while it is an altogether different matter when that land sits right in the middle of a once vital downtown and a key cog in the economic engine of a once vital town that has seen this very type of thing (among others)cause that vitality to be a thing of the past. |

It's just another part of the village "people" not caring or actually following through with consequences for "owners". The owners should be responsible for the expenses, why let it fall, literally, on the taxpayers. Come on, Mayor here's your chance to start making the difference in our community without hiring out for trash removal!!!

If the building is a safety hazard the village should think of knocking it down and charge the owners for the demolition costs. Thats what they do in Buffalo.

If the village can charge me a fee if I forget to mow my lawn or have someone mow it for me, I don't understand how the village can't intervene on a building that has been falling into disrepair for over 30 years. This building has always been an eyesore when I take visiting family through James St. or to Dockside for some wings...

I believe this store has not been open since 1971. It is time for this owner to fix it up or surrender the building to the village. It is in the business section of our village. Just because the owner doesn't live ,doesn't give him the right to let this building to into an eyesore.

Well aren't there certain codes for building appearances? I mean if it looks like sh^t then why not charge them fines for polluting the village visually?

This store front has been in bad shape for some time yet, with numerous attempts by neighbor business owners to purchase this store, it has been a NO GO! Two older gents refuse to sell. Hasn't been open in at least 30 yrs.

why do people insist on doing absolutely nothing to improve or just maintain their storefronts, or buildings? It is turning our once beautiful village into a real sh*thole ! If they can't afford it, sell it or figure out a way to make it right. This storefront is only one of the many in the downtown area. C'mon people do we really have to take notes from Clayton or the Cape?
