Save The River E-News for May 26, 2008

Training Session for Spill Response Volunteers
Save The River teams up with U.S. Coast Guard for training session Saturday, May 31

Save The River has teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard to train volunteers to assist in the event of a major shipping accident and spill on the St. Lawrence River. The training session will be held Saturday, May 31 from 8:30 a.m. – 12: 00 p.m. at the Clayton Municipal Building. The session is free but volunteers must pre-register by calling Save The River at (315) 686-2010 or e-mailing sarah@savetheriver.org.

If another major shipping accident and spill occurs on the River, volunteers who know the River will be needed to survey the impacted area so that first responders have as much information as possible to prepare effective response and clean-up plans. During the training session, volunteers will be trained to assess shoreline damage and will receive information on safety in a spill situation. Additionally, Save The River is looking for volunteers who would be able to manage the Save The River office and a ‘phone tree’ in the event of an accident to help get information to local community members and coordinate volunteer response.
