Killdeer Chick Hatches in Beefers Parking Lot
Posted Tuesday, July 08, 2008 at 11:01:24 AM       Abay.com - Alexandria Bay, NY 1000 Islands Region

I have been watching these Killdeer for a few weeks now.. I was lucky enough to capture a chick hatching on film and close up..

It happened right in the parking lot of Beefers Restaurant which I am running with my dad this year. I checked on these guys daily for about 3 weeks. I tried to make sure no one ran over them.

WOW! Thanks so much for that video! Now we can rest easy that momma killdeer and babies are OK. We ate breakfast at Beefers Saturday, and when we parked, we noticed momma killdeer's behavior, alerting us that there was a nest in the area. When leaving, we checked around before pulling out, and there is was, directly under the truck. We have been worried about those three little eggs out there in the open, and felt sure a vehicle tire would find them eventually. Thank goodness everyone survived the traffic. Maybe if this occurs next year someone could mark the area to protect it from traffic until the babies hatch. They were lucky this time.
