I dont see what that has to do with change. The guy is talking about replacing name brand booz with cheap booz and this isn't the 1st time someone has said something about it and that place. As for change, change is great if it is for the better. Nobody will argue that. (Take Dock of The Bay for example.. they have turned a unsuccessful place into a great spot) Regardless, if you or anyone else want to discuss things do it in the forums. Since people are not using the GUESTBOOK AS A GUESTBOOK From now on the GUESTBOOK is CLOSED FOR BUSINESS.. It will be viewable but no more posts in it.

AND ONE MORE THING, IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PEOPLE OF ABAY THEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU CAUSE I LOVE MY TOWN AND THE PEOPLE IN IT ARE SOME OF THE BEST PEOPLE ANYWHERE! I HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND ALWAYS FIND MYSELF COMING BACK HERE. STAY IN ROCHESTER IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PEOPLE HERE!

I was reading the message about the guy complaining about Jim Beam. I was in the bay last weekend setting up our race boat for the long winter. I stopped at the Old Islander and I had no problems. My wife and I have owned two bars. One in buffalo and one in rochester for over 20 years and get this same complaint. Many bars do use other products in exchange for some and it becomes mind over matter. If someone hears a person complain about the taste of a drink then all drinks taste bad. If I were to say a glass of milk taste sour then any milk you drink will taste that way. I think this dude needs to stop drinking and or stop looking for things to complain about. P.S. please dont come to rochester cause I am sure you will find something wrong with one of our drinks too. To the old islander keep up the great work! Looks great! I love the bay but not the people. People just dont seem to like change. Get over it all ready! busines in rochester or buffalo or syracuse is always going through changes. its called free enterprize dude!

On a recent trip to The "Dancing Dog", I asked the bartender for a crown royal, they didn't have any crown so I asked for a jim beam. This was the first stop on my evening rounds so I was quite aware of what was going on. After tasting the beam and thinking it tasted like scotch, I asked the bartender what he poured me and he showed me the Beam bottle. I left the "Dancing Dog" and stopped by Downtown and Skiffs and continued drinking Jim Beam. After a great night I stopped by the "Dancing Dog" for a night cap and ordered a Jim Beam. It was again not Beam and brought it to the attention of the bartender. He promptly took it off the shelf but offered little sympathy. What a horrible way to run a business.

I've really been checking out this site and love it's honest homespun flavor.

Like the ideal of doing some inquiring polls, in fact if i may suggest one? Every year about this time the news media comes around asking business owners how their season went. From all my years (which are many) of living and working in this area, they've very rarely told the truth. I guess they don't want to let their competitors know how they're really doing or their employees to know where all the money really went. But less I digress, here's what I'd like to know: How does our working class, the people behind the scenes feel this year went. Was it busier than other years?? Did they make any money?? Or will they have to live on ramein and pizza rolls all winter. Were the number of people coming here up or down?? And what do they think the village powers should do to make it better? What do you think Johnny T., inquiring minds want to know????

Thanks and keep up the good work !!

The mudruns over at can-am are every sunday now.A friend of mine who works there told me this today(08/29/06).I ask how it went and only three trucks were there and they all got stuck. But its all still new and anybody who has a fourwheel drive that can pretty much go through anything should go.Give it a try or just go and watch.Back to the food issue, has anybody ever ate at PJ'S down at FISHERS LANDING?My wife and I did and the food was pretty good.It was just that one time but we would eat there again. They have takeout and the service is good. Its also nice in there.Try it out people and respond back sometime.

Let's take care of the most pressing issue that should keep everyone busy for at least a year.

I've been reading this debate back and forth for a while now. At first I didn't want to respond, but "sammy" you have inspired me with your lack of understanding for this area. You also seem to be confused on the definition of some of the words in the english language.

To start with you wrote, "I'm just being honest but some people can't handle the truth. Yeah, the truth hurts until you fix it. But to argue the truth makes the alternative of not fixing it hurt even more and just bleeds ignorance."

That statement on it's own is ignorant. Everything written here is opinion. You have your views, and some of the people who have written here feel differently. That does not necessarily make any of it the "truth".

Sammy also writes, "People won't change because it's their nature to be defensive and protective of what little they have rather than do something about it".

Again an insulting statement. The people who have responded defensively are doing so because the way you are writing about us. The people that live here are proud of the community and should respond defensively when they are insulted. In one of the first posts you put up there was a comment saying that you "spend more here each summer than most of the locals make in a year" It's nice that you can afford to do that but, the people around here who don't make as much money as you apparently have way more class. They wouldn't insult someone, much less an entire town like that. You wrote, "Wow! Didn't know I would touch a nerve so." Well, your attitude and severe lack of understanding are causing people to become upset.

Sammy, "Went to both Myrtle and Daytona 40 years ago and they both looked like the Bay does now. There is no question what outside commercialism can do. And it isn't the year round thing. Otherwise cities like Toronto, Rochester, Buffalo, Quebec, Montreal would have died long ago. Not looking for that because quite frankly that won't happen. But you could easily have a city the size of Kingston here with 120K in the city proper. No difference. No reason why not. It's the town council plain and simple"

In the latest census data the population of Alexandria Bay was 1,088 people. In no way does that qualify as a city. To compare Alex Bay to Toronto, Rochester, etc, is ridiculous. We could easily have a 120K people?! There is no difference? There are lots of reasons why not. Alexandria Bay is a small town and most people want it to stay that way. I am also curious how commercialism will make us as large as Kingston. I don't think putting is a McDonalds will suddenly start a growth spurt multiplying our population by 120.

Sammy, "Build a complex or two and you get the Drum families begging for housing."

Nice thought but completely inaccurate. Fort Drum has increased their numbers greatly over the past few years and the rental properties were packed here and in communities all over the county, but only for a while. The initial overload is now being made up for with the new housing being built on and near the base. We about 30 miles from there and as soon as housing was available closer to the base, most families moved there.

Sammy, "You say nobody would come here because of the weather. They have tried since the beginning of time. So many franchising opps out there that would score. But once again, the local "council" have it in their genes to keep it local and that's why it's dying."

I am curious about the list of franchises begging to get in to the bay. When has the "local council" as you put it stopped any business from coming into town? I am not sure if you are aware of it but most of these franchises, especially the hotel and motels have quotas or minimum occupancy rates. These rates are fairly high and would be difficult to reach even in the summer much less the off season. They aren't here because they can't do enough business. And I can only speak for myself, but I don't really want the Bay to be commercial. I like the individual and unique places we have.

Sammy you said it yourself, "The castle and the river and the serenity is the draw. The summer takes care of itself."

You're right, the river and the serenity is the draw. I don't find anything serene about a couple of hundred thousand people, fast food, and 24 hour convenience stores.
Now, I'm not saying that Alexandria Bay doesn't need to improve, grow and develop. I think there are many things that we need to do to keep our town alive and to make it better for the locals and the tourists. But, for you to insinuate this town could change and improve if it wasn't for our stubborn locals and town council is just plain wrong. You don't seem understand this area or it's needs. What you have written sammy can be defined as ignorance.

Well obviously this is a debate that still rages after 50 years and will continue for years to come. You only know what you know. As for tax dollars, paid plenty and family has for over 100 years. We won't even go there as one of the highest and out of line in the state. This isn't Nassau County. Saw a bunch of polls lately for the best restaurants around. Not a one in The Bay. Most in Clayton or elsewhere. I'm just being honest but some people can't handle the truth. Yeah, the truth hurts until you fix it. But to argue the truth makes the alternative of not fixing it hurt even more and just bleeds ignorance. And voila, here we are. No need to post any more. It doesn't do any good. People won't change because it's their nature to be defensive and protective of what little they have rather than do something about it. If you only knew who I knew right? Well, all that matters is I'm in touch with over 20000 NYers daily and rather than deal with it here, we'll take care of it elsewhere. Word of mouth is so powerful. You will feel the effects very soon if not already. Peace out.

(Response from ABay.com) Huhh, what? Now WTF are you mumbling about? I got so bored I quit reading about half way through it. BTW: I am still waiting for that picture SizzleChest.

I just wanted to add to the Hype at Downtown real quick. I have to agree with you guys on the respect issue. They dont seem to have any respect for locals whatsoever in that place. Im not necessarily what one might call a local just yet, but a good friend of mine is. I got off early one night from Shipwreck, where I am a bouncer, and decided to go down and hang out with my buddies who are as local as you get in Alex Bay. Some of the guys there were really cool... (Props to Big Daddy, Trevor, and Mike).... but one bouncer was a real ass. We went outside for a minute, and then decided it was time to go home, since it was just after hours. Before we left my friend (who happens to be obviously handicapped) needed to use the restroom. When he turned around to walk back in he was rushed by the smallest bouncer I have ever seen. This bouncer pushed him twice when I yelled over to him that my friend had a handicap, and the fucker pushed him again. For his sake, this bouncer will remain nameless... but the problem was brought back to Downtown where I assume we worked it out. I have not been back over to see if this guy still works there, but I will not even consider working there let alone hangin out there if he is. It will be the upmost sign of disrespect, if this kid still has a job there.

On a different note, I just wanted to leave a link to my website here at abay.com for my official opening today, stop by and check it out!exclamation http://www.snypedesigns.bravehost.com exclamation

What would make you think that we want chains in the Bay?? If I want a good hamburger-forget McDonalds I'll go to the Dockside. If I want great pizza it's the Korner or Joey D's. We have some of the best restaurants around. Holiday Inns? The hotels and motels here are amazing, with something for everyone's price range. And don't forget about the cottage communities and the most beautiful state parks anywhere. Blockbuster?? We go to the Drive In from late spring to late fall, with great movies and great prices. You can keep your Regals with the outrageous prices. If I want a video, Village Video has a great selection and so does the library. If there's something I need that I can't get in the Bay, Watertown is just 20 minutes away, with an amazing amount of stores for such a small city, area-wise.
CPRoman's?? Good riddance. 120k people living here? No thanks to that too.
There is something for everyone here...from mazes to aqua-zoos and mini-golf for the family, to the nightlife for the over 21 crowd. No, the bars don't compare to places like NYC, but if you go somewhere like Skiff's and don't have a good time it's your own fault.
You are welcome to come here and spend your tourist dollars, but if you don't get a tax bill in the mail don't tell us how to run our village

Wow! Didn't know I would touch a nerve so. Apparently most of you don't understand how to move from stagnant to expanding. The castle and the river and the serenity is the draw. The summer takes care of itself. Put in a Best Western, Radisson, Holiday Inn Express, and the bookings take 8 months full. Puts 45 locals to work. A Mickey D, BK, KFC, or the like goes 12 months and puts another 20 to work each. Rte 12 picks up drive thrus from 3 directions. A Blockbuster goes 12 months and another 12 get jobs. Pizza Hut and Dominos pick up another 25 each. AMPM or Fast Trac going 24 gets you anotehr 20 each. Area is dead in winter because no draw. Outside business comes in. Offer a tax incentive for business to build and set up. That brings in families and year round residents. Build a complex or two and you get the Drum families begging for housing. You say nobody would come here because of the weather. They have tried since the beginning of time. So many franchising opps out there that would score. But once again, the local "council" have it in their genes to keep it local and that's why it's dying. You can see it even here. Romans gone. Bootleggers gone. PJs. Goergers. All replaced with a huge loser. Edgewood Buffet used to do 1000 every Sunday. Gone. Bonnie Night Club so gone. So many others. Went to both Myrtle and Daytona 40 years ago and they both looked like the Bay does now. There is no question what outside commercialism can do. And it isn't the year round thing. Otherwise cities like Toronto, Rochester, Buffalo, Quebec, Montreal would have died long ago. Not looking for that because quite frankly that won't happen. (Response from ABay.com) Sammy, I think that guy that called you a Toolbox was right on the money. If that is the best reasoning you got you should give it up now. You got no frigin clue what your talking about. I just might start a Dildo of the month award and give you top honors for August. Send me a picture brotha.. I'll make ya Famous. BTW, we got plenty of Drum families living in town and thought some of them are good people for the most part all it has brought is drug deals, domestic disputes, prostitutes, and garbage problems.. Go hang out at the Apartment complex at the end of Anthony and High Street and take your pick. I also got about 2 useless Drummies living in my apartment building on Church Street that have no respect for anything. The 1st thing they do when they get home is throw their MacDonald's & Wendy's trash in the back yard, then they go out front and trash talk and harass every 14 year old girl that walks by. Ya, just what we need in our town. I know there are good people in the Military, but I don't usually seem to meet them. As for Romans thank god that place is gone. Huge gang fights every friday night all Drummie related, knives, guns, you name it, multiple rapes in the parking lot out back, ya.. that place was just great... Sammy, you're a frigin genius..... Alex Bay could be just like Kingston with 120k people here someday??????... WTF are you talking about and who the f@#k wants 120k people here. Get your head out of your ASS.

(sammy) So you had a bad meal with bad service, geez I guess nobody else around has ever had that problem ANYWHERE, must just happen in places that are local establishments, where you may have been waited on by a meer local. First off yeah most of the employees are local or from the surrounding areas, but sometimes people from other areas of the state come here for the summer and work too. I mean hey I am sorry we are here for wait on people or clean their motel rooms, or bag their groceries, deliver pizza, pump the gas into boats, open everything up by Victoria Day, and have it a quiet little town for people to come to and enjoy the local attractions.
Chains in a town of about 1700 people (keep in mind about 800 of those are children ages 0-18) yeah that's gonna work. People would like to see a chain come in here, but realize that it most likely isn't going to happen (at least in our lifetimes) there just isn't enough revenue from Mid-September to mid-May to keep them here. Our big winter events are both in January, and face it the Fireman's Dance and the Fireman's ice fishing derby just are going to be real big draws for anyone but the locals.
So lets be realistic here, the Bay is a small town, about the size of a few blocks in Syracuse so having chains, and 24 hour stores and strip malls just isn't going to happen. Letting them in is not the issue isn't not like we wouldn't try, they just wouldn't last a year here, before having to close the doors.

(sammy) You would like to see chain places up here like Olive Garden and Best Western etc? That sort of thing? Lots of people would like to see chains in the Bay but I don't think its going to happen.Anyone who knows the Bay knows this isn't likely to happen real soon. What chain is going to come in here and open their doors for a season and close for 1/2 the year. They don't work that way. Winters are dead here and you said yourself that you come here for the summers so you probably already know that. I get the impression that you really don't like locals much. You aren't impressed by locals working in this town. You seem to view them as lesser than yourself. I'm not saying you couldn't have received poor service somewhere and that does suck. I suppose you know if a waiter or bartender is local or not when they serve you? I doubt it and I don't think it makes a difference either way where they are from. However I do think whomever trains them makes the difference and it doesn't mean they were trained by a local or not. So maybe some businesses need to step up their service a bit. I could probably agree with you there but lets not just blame it on the locals. The locals are what keep this town going. You say...."I spend more in this town every year than most of the locals make." Great... then just keep bringing the money into our little town and maybe you would like to bring a chain business into this town while you are at it? 24 hour nini mart! HAHAHAHA...I'm sure...like they would what get 2 customers a night in January. Have you any idea how many residents are in the Bay as compared to Syracuse that you like to compare the Bay to?

Re: Sammy
Too bad about you meal at Cavallarios Steak House.
Our Family has been going there since the --oh--late`60s.. and although changes have occured
( Frank no longer cooks) it's still a damn good meal for the money. Try a LIVE lobster ( what other restaurants in the area have that?) or the twin filets w/ crab meat. Another favorite is Veal Franciose. Don't judge a restaurant on just one visit. But then again, for someone so negative-- maybe it's best if you just stay at home- maybe cook your own friggin tube steak, then maybe you won't complain.
BTW- if you are such a kick ass F & B Manager, why do you "need something to do for the summer??"
Yeah, with your attitude, you must be waayyyy over qualified... rrrrright

Hey chill. Not trying to get on your bad side. I was present for all of them. Just had to go get the reviews and have the permissions. Still doesn't discount the fact that they did happen and are happening every day around here. Sorry for the local talent thing but that goes across 40 years of not letting the outside commercialism in. Let 'em in and every body has a job. Alot less turnover in business the end result. 24 hour mini mart. Stores open after 9PM. Clean up the downtown and give it a facelift. Get the major chains in here. Put in some strips. uild some developments. The place will thrive bigger and better than ever.

(Response from ABay.com) Ummm no, thats just goofy... you just don't get it... go to Lake Placid.. see how many food chains you find.. food chains dont do resort towns for the most part and with good reason.. they dont want to be here... regardless, bringing in chains has jack shit to do with anything.. and if the mini mart was open all night it would not be worth it.. no way.. no how.. and that goes for any time of the year.. its been tried... and there was ZERO business.. not even enough to pay the help and electricity... should downtown be cleaned up.. hell ya... but that is about all you said that makes sense..

(Response from ABay.com) Did you write these reviews or not ? While I appretiate you posting information I dont want reviews from other web sites copied and pasted into my site. That is copyright infringement and I wouldnt like that if someone did that to me. If you got an opinion or story that's great but copying info from somewhere else is not cool. What's the deal? Where is this info from? I will give it a week and if there is no response this post gets removed regardless.

Regarding Downtown, couldn't agree with you more! Scalping everyone for $10 a pop because it's Pirate's Weekend is bullshit. To make it worse, wife goes to bar and orders 2 drinks and a coke. I give her $10 not thinking. Comes to $10.25 and I was elsewhere. Reaches in her purse and remembers she used the $20 she had to get us in the door! She goes in her purse and digs out a couple bucks in change. All she had. Hands it to him to make sure he at least gets some tip which was easily 20%. He looks her square in the eye and throws it right back at her. "I don't want this shit!" All 5 in our group immediately left. Will never go back and knowing several hundred people in the area, will tell this story and encourage them to go elsewhere also. You only have 5 months a year to get it right and you failed miserably. Go ahead, keep hiring the college kids and the local talent over the best people for the job. Best way to lose customers.

(Response from ABay.com) Hey, 90% of the people that work there are not local and that is most of the problem.. the ones that are local treat people well. You most likely dealt with the non-locals. I am not a college kid, but I don't really think that has anything to do with it. There is good and bad help period.

If anybody is intrested in this info, than read this.As of august 18th can-am race track was sold. Some guy, nobody that i know bought it.I dont know if the racing will change but i did read from the web site that they will, change the name from can-am speedway to CAN-AM MOTORSPORTS ENTERTAINMENT.Also they will have mudruns (thats for fourwheel drive trucks ),4wheeler and snowmobile races, truck and tractor pulls, truck and car drags, and music concerts.I was told today , before I read this that they will also have motocross.I dont know if thats true or not.If people come to this site give your opion im curious on how people feel about this.

(Response from ABay.com) Humm, news to me and I host the cam-am speedway site for them on one of my servers. Guess I better look into it. As much as they love racing I can't imagine them doing that but who knows, maybe they are sick of dealing with it and got offered crazy money.

Was up for pirates week and was glad to see all my bro's chris, kenny, george, nick, scotty ect. Had a great time skiffs was rocking as usual. Was bummed I didn't get to catch up with my bouncing brother Ray. The good times I remember from bootleggers I even brought my shirt that I cut the sleeves and neck off off. I'm guessing they probally wouldn't have let me in downtown dressed like thatlaugh I could have been responsible for them instituting a dress code didn't wanna do that to you guys LMAO.

(Response from ABay.com) Real good to see you too brotha... sucks you never saw Big Ray though. How about that goofball nelson throwing shit around and doing magic tricks for us at upper skiff's. Real impressive stuff... NOT.
