When I was a kid my family bought a house up on Otter St., that was 40 some yrs ago and my brothers, sister and I explored every corner of the Meltzer's Quarry over the years. Always heard stories of kids going up to hangout and swim. Now that small pughole was full of the most stagnet water I've ever seen. I'm curious to hear if anyone actually went swimming there??? Fess up, Meltzers are dead and gone. Of course, hearing other stories of what went up up there could be interesting reading also. Any volunteers???

I can just envision snakes crawling all over.  I will ask the hubby, sounds like something he would do, but then again he's not the greatest swimmer, so maybe not.

I remember that creek. It was so long ago, but I do remember how nasty it was. I also remember that as a kid there was a neighbor who actually committed suicide there. I remember that was the first dead person I had ever seen. I was there when they pulled that guy out of that nasty creek and thinking how sad. I don't remember even the name of that neighbor, too many years have gone by. I do remember too that my sister had a little boat and we'd park it there and I now thinking back too how I remember how that creek had it's own awful odor.  Something how you remember things that happend 40 years ago.

Aha  Aha  Meltzer's QUARRY  some fond memories Heart, it was quite a hike from the village down the road between Blount's and Edgewood . As I remember the watter was cold and deep the climb up to the quarry was not bad, it was much easer to go over to Edgewood sneak into there pool, scenery was much better Wink  ( dose any one rememberer  Bea and her red Cadillac )

I spent many hours in the quarry exploring as a young lad.  Built a raft of questionable design one spring and did quite a bit of swimming in the pond that day. My friend ruined his "school" shoes and was given a double grounding for the offense.  In the early spring the sun would heat the surrounding rock and create a warm area for swimming and hanging out. I'm sure others used the area as I remember a few empty beer cans left behind. The water in the spring was cold but clear.  At least thats the way I remember it.

One time Dick Garlock dared my dad to slide down a rusted old cable at the big quarry whole. he did it and chewed up his hands pretty good.

How Strange, i was just talking about Bea today to someone.  I remember her crocheted bikini.  Wow, a blast from the past.

We used to swim in the Quarry also.  How about Big Rock in Redwood?

long overdue reply but the Meltzers are NOT long and dead. I am a granddaughter and still have a piece of that area. Haven't been up to swim in it in years... but i know one thing... hard to keep the water clean when it's being used as an active quarry which it was just a couple years ago. Shame it's dirty, none-the-less.
My dad had great stories of being up there as a kid....Wink
